Certificate as a Professional Interpreter

This 9 to 12 month program provides candidates the opportunity to select courses from a list of approved courses leading to a Certificate as a Professional Interpreter. Courses include Civil and Criminal Interpreting, Immigration Court, Administrative Hearings, Interpreting in Hospitals, Telephonic Interpretation, Interpreting for School Districts, Conference interpreting and principles of translation. A candidate must successfully complete 12 units in order to obtain a certificate as a professional interpreter.

Interpreting Civil Proceedings - 3 units – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction - $545.00

Pre-requisite: You must be fluent in English and Spanish.

This course covers family law proceedings, such as petition for dissolution of marriage actions, custody of minors, visitation rights, domestic violence, restraining orders, civil harassment orders, conservatorship, and emancipation of minors. Furthermore, this course includes unlawful detainers, probate proceedings, contract law, corporate law, malpractice, and personal injury actions. The protocol for depositions and the instructions to deponents are part of this course.  This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.

Advanced Interpreting Techniques in Criminal and Civil Matters - 3 units - 13 weeks - 33 hours of instruction - $545.00

Pre-requisite: You must be fluent in English and Spanish

This course includes legal terminology and offenses corresponding to federal court. Indictments, superseding indictments, federal plea agreements, racketeering, inside trading, interstate shipment, drug trafficking, trademarks, copyrights, corporate law and probate are some of the documents and cases included in this course. Expert witness testimony in weapons, firearms, bladed weapons, typewriters, DNA, fingerprints, and drugs are also part of this course. Mock examinations at the level of the Federal Court Interpreter Examination are presented throughout the duration of this course. Exam taking techniques are also introduced in this course. Consecutive techniques leading to segments of 120 terms are introduced. Simultaneous techniques leading to a speed of 200 words per minute, including simultaneous practices of expert witness testimony, are also introduced in this course. This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.

Interpreting in Immigration Court - 3 units - 13 weeks - 33 hours of instruction - $545.00

Pre-requisite: You must be fluent in English and Spanish

This course covers immigration terminology and proceedings. such as removal proceedings, bond re-determination, relief from removal, asylum, and expedited removal. We also cover simultaneous techniques applied to increase speed in the delivery.

Advanced Criminal Proceedings II - Professional - 1.5 units - 13 weeks - 15 hours of instruction - $398.00

Pre-requisite: You must be fluent in English and Spanish

This course includes advanced techniques in the consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation modes of interpreting. Advanced legal terminology is presented along with re-structuring techniques in the delivery of the sight readings. Accuracy in the delivery is measured with the goal of achieving an accuracy rate of 80% or better. 15 hours of instruction.

Interpreting as an Analytical Linguist - 3 units - 13 weeks - 33 hours of instruction - $545.00

Pre-requisite: You must be fluent in English and Spanish

Protocol in writing a summary and a transcript of a wiretap conversation. Protocol for verbal summaries. Coded words. Spanish and English syntax. Drug and colloquial terminology. Practice included.

English Syntax for Interpreters and Translators - 3 units - 13 weeks - 33 hours of instruction - $545.00

Pre-requisite: There is no pre-requisite for this course.

This is an English syntax course specifically designed to interpreters and translators. This course includes sentence construction, homophones, passive and active voice, prepositions, regular and irregular plurals, inversion, subjunctive mood, indirect speech, reporting, relative clauses, non-finite clauses, cohesion, coherence, ellipsis and substitutions. It also includes gerund vs infinitive, idiomatic and non-idiomatic speech and typical pitfalls in English syntax.
