Professional Interpreter Program

A candidate must successfully complete 12 units (4 courses) from the course list below in order to obtain a Certificate as a Professional Interpreter.

Advanced Interpreting Techniques in Criminal and Civil Matters – 3 units - $598 – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully completed our Admission Test

This course includes legal terminology and offenses corresponding to Federal Court. Indictments, superseding indictments, federal plea agreements, racketeering, inside trading, interstate shipment, drug trafficking, trademarks, copyrights, corporate law and probate are some of the documents and cases included in this course. Expert witness testimony in weapons, firearms, bladed weapons, typewriters, DNA, fingerprints, and drugs are also part of this course. Mock examinations at the level of the Federal Court Interpreter Examination are presented throughout the duration of this course. Exam taking techniques are also introduced in this course. Consecutive techniques leading to segments of 120 terms are introduced. Simultaneous techniques leading to a speed of 200 words per minute, including simultaneous practices of expert witness testimony, are also introduced in this course. This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.

Interpreting in International Conferences – 3 units - $598 – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully completed our Admission Test

This course covers the techniques used for escort assignments, seminars and conferences; the interaction within interpreting groups, transfer techniques, handling visual aids, question and answer sessions, dealing with multilingual situations and interpreting with a common working language. The terminologies of business, finance, economics, engineering, science, medicine, real estate and political are studied. The students will receive approximately 20 hours of conference practice in class. Conference practices will be interpreted in the consecutive technique with a retention level of two minutes leading to nine minutes. In simultaneous mode, speeds will range from 145 to 190 words per minute. Individual as well as team interpreting will also be covered. 33 hours of instruction.

Interpreting Civil Proceedings I – 3 units - $598 – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully completed our Admission Test

This course covers family law proceedings, such as petition for dissolution of marriage actions, custody of minors, visitation rights, domestic violence, restraining orders, civil harassment orders, conservatorship, and emancipation of minors. Furthermore, this course includes unlawful detainers, probate proceedings, contract law, corporate law, malpractice, and personal injury actions. The protocol for depositions and the instructions to deponents are part of this course. This course consists of 33 hours of instruction, one midterm, one final examination, and it also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.

Interpreting in Immigration Court and as an Analytical Linguist – 3 units - $598 – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully completed our Admission Test

This course covers immigration terminology and proceedings. Removal proceedings. Bond redetermination. Relief from removal. Asylum. Expedited removal. Simultaneous techniques applied to increase speed in the delivery. Code words typically heard by Analytical Linguists. Wiretap. Transcription. Protocol in transcribing a tape.

Interpreting for Hospitals and School Districts – 3 units - $598 – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully completed our Admission Test

General medical vocabulary is presented in Spanish and English. Sight translation of typical forms used in hospitals, such as MRI screening, refusal to permit blood transfusion, and discharge instructions are discussed in this course. Colloquialisms and slangs are also presented in this course. Consecutive techniques leading to a maximum length of 40 terms per segment are introduced. Techniques for the simultaneous mode of interpreting leading to a maximum speed of 130 words per minute are also part of this course.

Interpreting in Administrative Hearings and as a Telephonic Interpreter – 3 units - $598 – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully completed our Admission Test

This course includes vocabulary used in Workers Compensation cases, Employment Development Department, DMV, Unemployment actions, and Social Security Administration. The administrative proceeding in explained. Sight translation of typical forms used in any of the previously mentioned Administrative Hearings. Consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation techniques. Protocol in telephonic interpretation. Vocabulary typically used in telephonic interpretation, including legal, medical, insurance and customer services.

Principles of Translation – 3 units - $598 – 13 weeks – 33 hours of instruction

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully completed our Admission Test

This course includes the principle of localization, reversibility and irreversibility in the transfer, syntactical interferences, and the accepted protocol used in certified translations. Practices include translations of general, legal and medical documents. This course emphasizes the English into Spanish direction even though practices in the opposite direction are also included.
